What they do is narrower than most homeowners assume, and that gap is where the trouble starts, because a treated flue can look like a handled flue while the thing that actually needed attention sits there untouched.

Chimney sweeping logs do work, in a narrow and specific way. The additives they release travel up with the smoke and change the texture of creosote already on the flue walls, so some deposits dry out and become likelier to flake loose. They remove nothing themselves, they reach no blockage, and they tell you nothing about the liner, crown or cap.
What the log is actually doing up there
A sweeping log burns much like an ordinary firelog, but it carries additives that are released into the smoke as it burns. Those compounds ride up the flue with the exhaust and settle on whatever already coats the walls. Once there, they work on the structure of that coating, drying it and leaving it more brittle than it was. The whole effect is chemical. Nothing in the process scrubs, scrapes, brushes or pulls material down the way a sweep does, so anything that loosens stays in the chimney until something removes it.
How much difference that makes depends on what is up there and where it sits. Soft, sooty deposits respond best, because less holds them to the tile. The hard, shiny, tar-like layer that forms in a flue running cool and smoky responds far less, and sometimes not at all. Flue shape matters too, since the smoke has to actually contact a surface for the additive to land on it, and a wide flue serving a small fire keeps much of its wall out of the stream. Two neighbors can burn the same log and see nothing alike.
Reading what lands in the firebox afterward
The useful part of burning one is not the cleaning, it is the sample. Material may drop into the firebox and onto the smoke shelf afterward, and what falls tells you something about the flue you cannot otherwise see. Dull, dry, crumbly black flakes mean a soft deposit was up there and is now letting go. Hard shiny chips that snap rather than crumble point to the glazed kind, which a log will not resolve on its own. Sweep the hearth clean before you light it, so anything that arrives is unmistakably new.
Not everything that falls is creosote, and mistaking one for another sends people down the wrong road. Sandy gray grit is mortar or the surface of a clay tile giving up, which is a masonry question rather than a soot question. Orange-brown flakes are rust from metal above, usually the cap or the damper frame. Twigs, leaves and dry plant matter mean something has been lodging or nesting up there. Nothing at all is the ambiguous result, because it fits a fairly clean flue, a deposit too hard to react, and a passage already blocked.
What no log can reach or reveal
A log burns in the firebox and its influence ends where the smoke goes. It cannot move a nest, clear a drift of leaves, dislodge a fallen piece of liner or push past anything solid. If the passage is obstructed, the log leaves the obstruction exactly where it was, and the smoke it makes has the same trouble getting out as any other fire. A fireplace that used to draw well and now does not is often obstructed, and that is precisely the case a log cannot touch or even detect.
The larger blind spot is condition. Burning one tells you nothing about whether the clay tiles are cracked, whether a mortar joint between them has washed out, whether the crown above has split, or whether the cap is still doing its job. In this climate those are the failures that progress quietly, because humidity stays high all year and wind-driven rain arrives for months at a stretch between June and November. A flue can be chemically treated and structurally unsound at the same moment, and the log has no opinion whatever about the second half of that sentence.
Telling a deposit problem from the ones that look like it
Most people reach for a sweeping log because of a symptom, usually a smell, a sluggish fire or smoke drifting into the room. Those symptoms have several possible causes and only one of them is deposit related. A sour smell that worsens on humid days is moisture working on whatever lines the flue, often together with air being drawn down the chimney into a closed-up house, and no additive changes either of those. Smoke that spills for the first few minutes and then settles is a cold flue, which is a temperature problem.
Treat the log as a test rather than a cure and it earns its place. Burn one, watch the hearth, and see whether the symptom shifts at all. No change in the smell, no change in the draft and nothing on the hearth is a meaningful result, because it points away from a soft deposit and toward moisture, obstruction, house air supply or the structure itself. Knowing which of those you are dealing with is worth more than a vague sense that the chimney needs something, and it makes the conversation with a chimney pro far shorter.
Reading whether your flue is a candidate at all
A flue that gets swept on a sensible schedule is the one where a log makes sense between visits. A flue nobody has looked inside is a different situation, because the unknown there is not texture, it is what has accumulated and what shape the liner is in. If you cannot say when it was last swept, the log answers none of the questions worth asking. Whatever the additive loosens still has to come out, and the only thing that brings it out is a brush and a set of hands.
Two situations rule a log out entirely. Never burn one in a gas fireplace or a gas log set, since those appliances are built for a single fuel and their venting is not something to experiment with, and if you ever smell gas in the house, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. If you think a chimney fire has already happened, from a roaring sound, a hot acrid smell or debris on the roof, stop using the fireplace until the flue has been examined. A fire burning in a flue means everyone leaves and 911 is called.

Do sweeping logs actually remove creosote?
No. The additives change the texture of deposits already on the flue wall, so some of it becomes dry and brittle enough to fall or brush away more easily. The material still has to be taken out of the chimney, and nothing in the log does that part. Whatever comes loose lands on the smoke shelf or in the firebox.
Nothing fell into the firebox afterward. Is that good news?
Not necessarily, which is the useful thing to know. A flue with little soft deposit and a flue coated in hard glazed material can both produce nothing at all. So can a blocked passage, since the smoke never reached the walls properly. Read an empty hearth as an unanswered question rather than an all clear.
Can I use one in a gas fireplace?
No. Gas fireplaces and gas log sets are built for one fuel, and burning a solid product in them is outside what the appliance and its venting are designed to handle. Gas units and their vents are not homeowner service items either. If a gas fireplace is behaving oddly, shut it off and have it looked at, and if you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility.
Does a sweeping log reduce chimney fire risk?
Only indirectly, and only in part. Drier, looser deposits are easier to remove, but the risk comes from fuel still sitting in the flue, and the log leaves it there. Hard glazed buildup, the kind most associated with serious flue fires, is also the kind an additive affects least. Removal is what lowers the load, so treat a log as a supplement to sweeping and never a substitute.
