How chimney draft works, and why it is weak in South Florida
Every explanation of a smoky fireplace quietly assumes you already know why a chimney pulls at all. Almost nobody does, and that missing piece is why so much fireplace advice sounds arbitrary. Draft is not suction, and nothing in the chimney is doing any work. Once you understand the small handful of things that create it, most smoke and odor symptoms become readable instead of mysterious, and bad advice becomes easy to spot.

A chimney draws because the column of air inside it is warmer, and therefore lighter, than the air outside. Heavier outside air pressing in at the base displaces that column upward, and room air flows in behind it. Height, flue width, and how warm the chimney stays all change the strength. In a warm climate the temperature difference is small, so draft is weak by default.
What actually makes the air go up
Warm air weighs less per cubic foot than cool air. Fill a vertical shaft with warm air, leave the bottom open to a room, and the lighter column inside cannot hold its position against the heavier air outside pressing in at the base. The column rises, and room air flows in underneath to take its place. That is the entire mechanism. There is no fan, nothing pulling from the top, and nothing in the chimney itself that moves anything at all.
Two things set the strength of that effect. One is how much warmer the column is than the outdoor air. The other is how tall the column is, because the imbalance accumulates over its height. A tall chimney carrying hot gas draws hard. A short chimney carrying gas that has already cooled barely draws at all. Everything else people argue about, flue width, cap style, how dry the wood is, works by changing one of those two quantities.
Why draft is weak here by default
The temperature difference driving the whole thing is strongly seasonal in most of the country and barely exists here for much of the year. On a mild evening the air standing in the flue starts out close to outdoor temperature, so the column has almost no head start and the fire has to build the difference from nothing. Add air conditioning, which holds the interior of the house cooler than the air outside, and the imbalance can briefly run the wrong way entirely.
High humidity all year works against a fireplace too, in a smaller way, by keeping flue surfaces and any residue on them damp, so early heat goes into evaporating water rather than warming the column. No freeze and thaw cycle occurs here, which spares local chimneys one common form of masonry damage, but nothing about this climate helps a fire start. The first several minutes are simply harder than they would be somewhere cold, every single time.
Width, height, and where the chimney runs
A flue too wide for its fireplace slows the gas down, slow gas cools, and cool gas stops rising. A flue too narrow cannot carry the volume a large opening produces. The relationship between the size of the fireplace opening and the cross section of the flue above it is the reason those dimensions are never arbitrary, and it is the first thing worth questioning about a fireplace that has never drawn well since the day the house was built.
Where the chimney runs through the building matters as much as its dimensions. A flue enclosed within the house stays near indoor temperature between fires, so it starts warm and begins drawing quickly. A flue on an outside wall, or one climbing a chase exposed on three sides, sheds heat continuously and starts cold. Two otherwise identical fireplaces can behave completely differently for that reason alone, and better firewood will not close the gap, because the problem is heat loss rather than fuel.
The house is half of the system
Air going up the chimney has to be replaced, and it can only come from outside. That makes the chimney one opening in a building that is itself behaving like a chimney, warm or cool air moving through it wherever gaps allow. A house that leaks air easily supplies the replacement without noticing. A tightly built one cannot, so the pressure inside drops slightly, and the flue becomes the path of least resistance for air coming in rather than going out.
There is also a height at which pressure inside a house matches pressure outside. Air tends to move in on one side of that level and out on the other, and the direction flips depending on whether the interior is warmer or cooler than the air outdoors. Where a fireplace sits relative to that level changes how easily it starts, which is part of why a ground floor fireplace and an upstairs one in the same house do not behave alike. That level shifts through the day as doors, windows, and equipment change.
Reading your own draft before you light
You can read draft without instruments. Hold a lit match or a smoking stick of incense just inside the fireplace opening, damper open and no fire burning, and watch the smoke. Smoke drawn steadily inward and upward means the flue is already moving air the right way. Smoke that hangs still means there is no temperature difference to work with yet. Smoke pushed back out into the room means air is coming down the flue, and a fire lit under it will smoke.
That same test separates two problems that feel identical from an armchair. A flue that reverses on a warm afternoon and behaves on a cool morning is a temperature story, and warming the flue before lighting usually settles it. A flue that will not draw under any conditions, or one that worked for years and now does not, is a physical story about something in the passage. Establish which one you have, and stop burning until you know, because gas that does not go up goes into the room.

Does a chimney pull smoke up, or does the room push it?
The room pushes, in effect. Heavier outdoor air pressing in at the base of the house displaces the lighter column standing in the flue. Nothing at the top is pulling. That framing is useful, because it explains why a house short of replacement air can stop a fireplace working even when the chimney itself is perfectly sound.
Can I warm the flue before lighting a fire?
Yes, and in this climate it is often the single most useful habit to build. With the damper open, hold a rolled sheet of newspaper, lit at one end, up inside the firebox toward the damper opening for a short while before laying the fire. Warming the column gets air moving before there is much smoke to carry. Never leave a flame unattended.
Does a taller chimney always draw better?
Taller helps, up to a point, because the imbalance builds over the height of the column. Beyond that, extra height means more surface losing heat and more resistance along the way, so the gains flatten out. Height also has to relate sensibly to the roof around it, which is a separate question from the draft physics.
Is weak draft dangerous, or just annoying?
Treat it as a safety matter rather than a nuisance, because weak draft means combustion products are not leaving reliably. Keep working carbon monoxide alarms in the house and stop using the appliance until the cause is understood. If you ever smell gas, leave the building first and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
